There are several things that you can do to keep your carpet in the best shape possible and extend your investment. These simple tips are easy to do and will keep your carpet looking its best in between regular professional cleanings.
Carpet Maintenance Tip #1 – Suck it Up
That’s right, break out the old trusty vacuum on a regular basis. The reason for this is that it keeps the dirt from settling in the bottom of your carpet fibers. If the dirt settles down in the bottom of the fibers it can then become a permanent stain if it becomes wet from a spill, a pet or something else. Vacuuming is often a good way to get the kids involved so don’t be afraid to add it to their chore chart and keep that carpet clean!
Carpet Maintenance Tip #2 – Use Sun Block
Prolonged exposure to sunlight can begin to fade and break down carpet fibers over time. This is especially true of darker colored fabrics, which is the color range we recommend for low maintenance carpet. That doesn’t mean you have to turn into a vampire and live in perpetual darkness (unless you are in fact a vampire). Simply do your best to keep the light exposure to a minimum. If you have areas of your home that get exposed to a large amount of sunlight we suggest closing blinds and/or drapes before you leave for the day. This will limit the amount of exposure and help prolong the life of your carpet.
Carpet Maintenance Tip #3 – Let’s Keep it Clean
It pays to have a small cleaning kit on hand to take care of every day spills and messes in between professional cleanings. A basic cleaning kit will generally contain the following elements:
Clean, lint free cloths
These can be slightly dampened and used to blot up moisture from spills and messes. Do not rub it in! This only causes the source of the stain to go deeper into the carpet fibers.
While there are many options out there we recommend a simple, enzyme-based solution.
This will help you to extract as much of the enzyme-based cleaning solution as possible as you scrape it out. This will prevent you from using a rag and simply rubbing it deeper into the carpet fibers.

One other tip for easy carpet maintenance is to limit the amount of dirt being tracked into the house.
